This was mentioned in the Archetype thread, but I think that it deserves it's own thread.
What do you see as inspiration for the various different headers/races/genres of OR?
Aside from the obvious paralells to the tabletop game
Shadowrun, I'm sure we all have various visions of what different bits of the game should be.
Personally, I'm envisioning the inter-corporate shadow warfare being very much akin to the online shooter
Blacklight: Retribution. ()
It's a nice mix of near future sci-tech without getting into ray-guns and the like. Plus they let you use hardsuits.
What can I say, robots make the little kid in me squee...

I sorta see it as The World of Darkness setting from White Wolf mixed with Lovecraft and the Dresden Files.
Some of them actually call it out in the description like the Gunslinger, who has quotes from Equilibrium.
Overall I think it's taking a great sampling and making a best of all worlds setting that's pretty unique.

For the record: I have never played Shadowrun. I have never read Shadowrun. The entirety of my Shadowrun experience consists of reading the back of the X-Box video game and getting a 5 minute run down from a friend after O.R. was already posting regular updates.
Other than that, though, this thread is quite interesting...

I for one see a lot of similarities to the Comic books Hellboy, Hellblazer (John Constantine), and Gentleman Corpse. When compared to The Bound, Demonologist, Excorcist, and The Ridden respectively.
And X-Files anyone?

The first one that comes to mind is the Matrix. The Operator deffinitely got some inspiration from there.
About half of the sources you guys are posting I've never heard of. But now I can look them up and know what I'm getting into, and knowing is half the battle. Too bad the other half of the battle usually involves pointy things or bullets aimed at my face...

The Gen 3 Cyborgs remind me of Cyborg 009. The ones that look human are the ones you need to be afraid of.

...no? My cyberpunk tends to come from William Gibson, Snow Crash, the Matrix, and Deus Ex...

I'm currently playing through Deus Ex Human Revolution currently. It's kinda fun so far, though i'm not too far into it.
Jake: to answer your question from the Archetypes forum, The Legend of the Six Samurai is a lengthy japanese epic about things that aren't important to my point about Rappaccinians. In any case, the bad guys try to find a way to kill the six samurai. The evil empress' head henchman gives her a gift of six (maybe more, it's been a few years) beautiful women. She goes "great, what are they supposed to do?" The henchman pulls out a box of butterflies, who flit around the women, who lift their veils, and it turns out that their exhalations are poison and the butterflies die.
I'm trying to find a clip or something but internets has failed me. I gotta dig through my movies to find it. Perhaps I've gotten the title wrong. But I'll find it!
